Scarlet red — a force to be reckoned with — does not have to dominate your cottage decor. Paired with the white painted furniture of a cottage dining room or the earthy tones of a lodge living room, this deep red punctuates the neutrality of a room in a powerful yet poised way. Incorporating scarlet can be as easy as adding red throw pillows to a white slipcovered sofa, a square red floral tablecloth diagonally over the center of a long planked farmhouse table, or a red painted end table next to a whitewashed coffee table. The red at the top left of our Color Board is one option for just such an end table from our Country Classics Collection, just one of our many furniture lines offering various styles of occasional tables.

Our featured scarlet-compatible wool rugs range from one with a solid, slightly rusty red background with a subtle and dainty border to two other boldly patterned rugs worked in many colors. Earthy colors such as mossy green and beige in the rug design, along with red, allows many color possibilities for accessories. A rug such as the 100% wool Fort Apache Sandstone Hand Tufted Rug lets you easily tie scarlet in with beige, pale aqua, indigo or even a brownish green. The solid and striped fabrics we have pictured from our Shoreline Slipcovered Fabric Collection are just two possible accompaniments to go with the overall color scheme.

How do you tie red into your cottage decor?

As colder weather nears, we couldn’t decide whether we were more drawn to the idea of the comforts of indoors outside or the hallmarks of outdoors inside, so we married the two scenarios in our Rooms to Love. Equally appealing to the homebody in us all, the fireplaced farmhouse living room and lodge porch above both offer rusticity as well as small touches of welcome luxury.

Hunker down by the fireplace in this farmhouse living room in an overstuffed armchair resplendent with cushy pillows in a stag motif. What sets this room apart is that despite the stark whitewashed hearth and exposed beams, the space crackles with warmth from the woodsy stash of fire logs, the honeyed antique trunk coffee table and the wreathlike antler design mirror. On the other hand, an outdoor lounging area fit for a tsar betrays none of its wintry temperature as long as the candles glow and the wood benches and chairs are covered in faux rabbit fur. These plush accessories take off the chill and make this lodge style porch one to lounge on in all seasons rather than to only pass through.  Softening the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces can create a feeling of integration and fluidity as well as alter your perspective on coziness.

Where is your favorite place to escape in the Great Outdoors?

We love this room because it pulls off a grandness of scale while remaining comfortably cozy. Thanks to its earthy tones and horizontal lines, this true open concept living room harbors no cold pockets of space. The floor to ceiling windows provide a majestic view while the low, sleek lines of the furniture and the simple wooden mantel create a communal feeling. The narrow ledge from the level above also creates a subtle boundary without overshadowing the seating area. The soothing neutrals of the muted brick hearth wall seem to melt down into the perfectly matched hues of the chairs, sofas and area rug. A few well-chosen accessories in warm colors add dimension and a thoughtful symmetrical arrangement cements the look. The tailored silhouettes and mix of wood and fabric create a Scandinavian vibe so perfect for lodge living.

Do you prefer soaring ceilings or cozy closeness?

Today’s Rooms to Love is a beautiful example of how warm and cozy lodge style homes can be with the right decor.  Large exposed beams and stone fireplaces are quintessential features in lodge style homes, and as beautiful as these natural elements are, they can pose a design challenge in the bedroom.

In order to soften this robust space, textiles were used wherever possible.  Thick cushions, plush pillows, and luxurious blankets drape the bed and corner bench, providing irresistible places to lounge.  But the most important textile for this space is the almost-wall-to-wall rug, not only because of the beautiful neutral colors, but the large size.  We don’t normally root for hiding wood floors, but in this case it is the right design decision.  The space has so much exposed wood that hiding the dark floors with the rug balances the overall feel of the space.

If this was your home, would you change the wall color or keep it mossy green?

We love this lodge style dining room and all of the rustic elements that make it so unique.  Who uses birch tree wallpaper?  A designer who really knows how to make a statement!  Huge exposed natural timbers lining the walls and gambrel roof, and a massive twig chandelier hanging in the center of the room, create large scale focal points.  The ambiance must be truly amazing in the evening with the lights low.  It probably feels like you are dining in the middle of the great outdoors!

How much would you love dining in this one of a kind space?

We love this lake house cottage for it’s cozy, family-friendly ambiance! The L-shaped sectional is big enough for the whole family to enjoy movies, game night, or to warm up by the fire on a chilly night. It’s also made of indoor/outdoor materials, so it’s tough enough to stand up against wet bathing suits and spills, which is inevitable in this NH lake side cottage.

The built-in cubbies are essential for this small, 500 square foot cottage, and is a great way to tuck away items like blankets and baskets, but still keep them easily accessible for daily use. The homeowners did such a fantastic job creating decorative vignettes that gives this cottage a very unique style. Click here to see the before and after pictures of this trans-formative renovation.

Do you prefer open shelving, like the cubbies, for storage, or more closet space to hide things away?

Today’s Get the Look is a modest yet stylish front porch that has everything you need to carve out a small outdoor eating area.  Starting with comfort, you want a place to sit and relax, where you can have coffee in the morning or a dinner and drink in the evening.  To replicate the look we chose our favorite wicker garden set, which offers a high back chair for comfort and a table that can accommodate up to six people, if you have the space to entertain.  To really capture the beauty of outdoor ambiance, we suggest adding potted plants, hanging flowers, and lanterns.  These small but essential items will make all the difference in creating a beautiful outdoor dining area.

Do you have any tips or tricks to keep the bugs away while you dine outdoors?

The beauty of cottage style decorating is that anything goes!  Putting together a cottage look is really about choosing pieces that are comfortable, casual and colorful.  For today’s cottage living room Inspiration Board, we choose a braided rug as the main source of color, as it is filled with oranges, blues, reds, purples, and greens for a lively focal point.  To create a comfortable seating area we chose our most popular accent chair, the Seaport Petite Slipcovered Accent Chair, which is shown in a crisp white, washable fabric for a casual feel.  For a TV console, we chose a 3 door unit, and designed it with one Bermuda shutter door, so that you can use remote controls for components even when the doors are closed. The variation in door styles and the two color rubbed finish on the console gives the piece a unique cottage style look.

This cozy country home has so much style in such a small space. Primitive country accents, including the needlepoint pillow, checkered drapes, and roughly painted end tables, are carefully arranged throughout the open concept family room for a homey, lived in feel.  The architecture in this home is a beautiful blend of old and new. Rustic elements, like the stone hearth, old pine flooring, and reclaimed wood loft blend seamlessly with polished elements, like the crisp kitchen cabinetry, and beadboard walls. A perfect concoction of new and old in this tiny country cabin.

What is your favorite primitive country accent?
