We love this bedroom for the vintage inspired style and soothing color scheme.  The wrought iron beds, small end table, and simple stool all share the same rustic, chipped painted finishes that create a time worn and antique feel.  Adding the heirloom style quilts and worn-in rag rug gives the space the homey feel you want in a cozy bedroom.  This space is such a beautiful blend of both coastal cottage and farmhouse style decor.  We can see it right at home in either a charming farmhouse in the country or in a quaint cottage by the sea.

What is your favorite accent in this quaint vintage inspired bedroom?

This rustic chic bedroom is filled with drama, color saturation, and chic bohemian accents for a mixed and eclectic style!  The dark navy paneled walls are absolutely stunning, and create quite the impact in the overall design scheme.  The rust and honey hues in the rug pick up the rich tones in the oak flooring perfectly, and the combination breathes so much warmth into the space.  Layering the bed in bohemian style blankets and accent pillows really add so much personality and flair to the space.  True vintage iron beds are chipped and the paint finish is worn away to create this amazing aged and rustic texture.

We love this small attic space for its cozy cottage style!  Keeping the walls, ceilings, bed linens and bedside tables all white opens the space up and creates a light and bright ambiance.  The iron bed is a perfect choice to keep the room feeling uncluttered with its simple, yet fashionable, style.  The color palette is so flexible because all you have to do is swap out the bed pillows or change the wall decor to drastically change up the look in this white cottage bedroom.

This charming country bedroom offers a soft palette of green, coral, cream, and honey tones for a quiet and restful feel.  The quintessential country cottage bedroom must have a braided rug, and this one brings the whole palette together!  Braided rugs are a great investment, because they are typically made of natural fibers like wool or cotton which are easy to clean, are reversible for maximum life, and the tight weave is strong and resilient in high traffic areas.

The beadboard bed is a great design for spaces that need a little extra storage!  The underbed rolling cubbies allow for a place to hide away linens and clothes in a stylish and space saving way.

TV in the Bedroom?

We recently polled our facebook fans and asked the question, “TV in the bedroom? Yay or Nay?” We had a staggering amount of responses, and found that the results were neck-in-neck. 46% of the responders said no way would they ever have a TV in the bedroom, whereas 54% said they absolutely love having a TV in the bedroom! Even though there is no right or wrong answer, we wanted to share some of the pros and cons people posted from both sides of this heated debate.

Pros

  • In the colder months, there is nothing better than curling up in your nice warm bed to catch up on some of your favorite shows.
  • It is more comfortable to lie down and/or stretch out in bed versus on the sofa.
  • Another viewing area is helpful to avoid disagreements at home.
  • It is nice to have background noise when you fall asleep.
  • A great way to wake up in the morning is with coffee, in bed, while watching the morning news.

Cons

  • The noise and/or light level interrupts deep and restful sleep.
  • The bedroom is supposed to be a peaceful place, and the TV disrupts that.
  • There are TV’s in the rest of the home, so it doesn’t need to be in the bedroom too.
  • It is aesthetically displeasing.

If you find yourself in a disagreement with your partner about whether or not you should have a TV in the bedroom, here are a few ways to compromise.

Compromising

  • Have a TV in the bedroom, but put it in a cabinet that has closed doors. That offers an “out of sight and out of mind” mentality when not in use.
  • Use the sleep timer to make sure that the television shuts off, even after you have fallen asleep. That way it does not continue to interrupt deep and restful sleep for you or your partner.
  • Bring the laptop into bed instead of having a TV set up all of the time. It allows the TV viewer to put on headphones to listen in, while the other partner is none the wiser.

From an cottage decorating point of view, there are a lot of unobtrusive ways to incorporate a TV into your design scheme that don’t make it a focal point.  Here are some beautiful inspiration photos to help you find the right solution for your bedroom:

How do you weigh in about having a TV in the bedroom?  Any new thoughts that might sway a yay or a nay-sayer to the other side?

This elegant farmhouse bedroom features a beautiful collaboration of warm wood tones and soft linens that create an enchanting space.  The combination of table lamps and overhead chandelier lighting plays an integral role in suffusing this room with a warm and romantic glow.  The scrolling wrought iron bed with flowing white and beige linens is a the natural focal point, exuding a relaxing and luxurious retreat feeling to the room. The delicate features of the chandeliers and the dainty floral print in the rug give the appearance of a predominately feminine space, however, the rugged barnboard flooring and heavy scaled dresser provide the right amount of masculinity to balance the space.

Staff Picks: Katie’s Compromise “The Master Bedroom”

Gender Neutral Master Bedroom | Staff Picks: Katie's Compromise

Deciding on the look of the master bedroom can be a tricky situation for some couples! Here’s Katie’s take:

This serene green color package brings together our two distinct tastes of casual elegance and rustic farmhouse charm to create a gender neutral master bedroom.  It is a melody of seafoam and sage greens, with a splash of brown and black blended together perfectly in the striped rug.  The arched upholstered headboard in the soft seafoam fabric is a flawless choice that captures elegant simplicity.  It is also the most comfortable thing for sitting up in bed while nighttime reading!  The reclaimed wood floors and end tables are a great source of natural texture and character that offsets the soft feminine textiles of the bed.  And of course the chandelier is a perfect compromise – a feminine shape carved beautifully from a more masculine material.  The layers of greens and the blending of materials creates a harmonious balance for a restful, yet inspiring, space.

Design Tip: Layering Your Linens

As we hunker down for a long winter here in New England, we are reminded to prepare our beds for cozy sleeping.  Here are a few cottage bedroom decorating ideas and inspiration photos for an inviting, warm, and easy to care for seasonal bed!

1) Choose a comfortable type of sheet set, because that is what your body will be predominately exposed to.  There are several kinds to choose from, but we prefer 100% cotton because there are no harsh chemicals found in cotton.  It is a hypoallergenic material, soft to the touch, and an environmentally friendly natural fiber.  It is also an easy to care for material, durable, and not prone to pesky static!

2) Choose a down comforter that is going to work well with the type of “sleeper” you are.  This refers to the temperature you keep your bedroom at, as well as how your body naturally regulates temperature throughout the night.  For people who are cold sleepers, meaning you tend to be chilly and require a lot of heat to maintain comfort, than it is suggested to choose a heavy weighted down filled comforter.  On the other hand, people who tend to be warm sleepers, meaning you tend to heat up or over-heat easily, than it is suggested to use a lighter weight down comforter.  Retailers all rate their products individually, and it is best to consult a sales professional when determining which of those retailers’ comforter level is best for you.

If you have any allergies to down fill, there are several synthetic comforters to choose from as a hypoallergenic alternative.  Some premium comforter retailers offer a synthetic down fill, which feels, warms, and clusters just like real down feathers.

3) Choose a blanket to top your comforter that is going to be weighty enough to hold in the heat.  It is imperative to have this layer of blanket to trap in the heat below and keep you nice and toasty.  If you are a warm sleeper, and don’t need as much added warmth, than choose a blanket that has a more crocheted or basket weave where air can circulate through.

This layer is also where you can have fun with color and texture to make your bed’s personality shine.  Do you want a cool and classic color combination, or do you want a vibrant and bold graphic look?

4) Building off of your top blanket layer, you want to choose shams and decorative pillows that will play off of your color scheme.  There is no need to overdo the decorative pillows, and there is a reason they are called throw pillows!  Choose a practical number of extra pillows that you don’t mind tossing on and off the bed daily.
